Don't Duck Metadata
Nuna Technologies was the project lead on a USGS grant awarded to the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium to compile metadata in the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standard. This effort focused on legacy data sets that are essential to scientific research efforts in the area surrounding Barrow and Atqasuk on Alaska's North Slope. The documented data is availale online through the federally recognized clearinghouse at the Arctic System Science (ARCSS) Data Coordination Center (ADCC) at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado and through the Barrow Area Information Database - Internet Map Server at http://www.baidims.org

Mapping and Characterization of Recurring Spring Leads and Landfast Ice in the Beaufort Sea
Nuna Technologies was subcontracted to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to provide image processing and GIS services for this study which was funded by the U.S. Department of Interior Minerals Management Services.

The aim of this project was to map and document changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of recurring lead systems and coastal polynyas off the coast of northern Alaska in the Chukchi Sea between Wainwright and Barrow and the Beaufort Sea between Barrow and the Mackenzie River Delta. Furthermore, the extent and stability of the landfast ice along this stretch of coast was analysed. Remote sensing imagery, specifically Radarsat Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data, was analysed for the time period between 1993 and 2004. These data were compared to older AVHRR imagery archived at the Geophysical Institute's GeoData Center from the 1970's and 1980's. Monthly mean landfast ice edge positions as well as spatial statistics of lead distributions were derived from these data for the time period of stable, closed sea-ice cover. Longer-term spatio-temporal variations in landfast ice extent and lead patterns were assessed in the context of large-scale atmospheric and oceanic change. Project products and deliverables include image mosaics, geodatabases, ArcGIS grids, shapefiles and corresponding metadata of monthly mean landfast ice edge position and spatial statistics of lead patterns.

BASC Digital Working Group (DWG)
Allison Gaylord was contracted to chair the BASC DWG from April, 2003 to August, 2004 which provided oversight and guidance to the rapidly developing IT infrastructure in Barrow, Alaska.  The demand for collecting and accessing high precision spatial data (including GPS, GIS and remotely sensed imagery), high speed data transmission plus networking capability are addressed through a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service
Allison Gaylord was the local coordinator for a multi-agency initiative directed to conduct Benthic Habitat Mapping in American Samoa.  This effort included extensive logistical support for field surveys, the utilization of IKONOS satellite imagery, ESRI's ArcGIS software, Trimble GeoExplorer 3 GPS units and digital cameras with underwater housing to conduct perform image analysis, waypoint navigation, ground truthing and accuracy assessment.  Products included postprocessed GPS data, ArcView shape files, metadata, report maps and georeferenced digital underwater imagery for the American Samoa Benthic Habitat Classification Manual.  http://biogeo.nos.noaa.gov/projects/mapping/pacific/territories

Educational Outreach Grant
The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) awarded an educational outreach grant to Barrow High School in northern Alaska. Nuna Technologies provided technical assistance to implement a cutting edge GIS / Remote Sensing lab for use in high school science courses. This project included the compilation of a large database of GIS data and satellite imagery; ArcView GIS training for science teachers and students; and curriculum development with custom lessons built on local issues and research activities.

Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary (FBNMS)
Nuna Technologoes provided data management assistance to develop an integrated GIS database focused on
marine GIS applications in American Samoa:  including Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), bathymetry, boundary delineation, coral and fish surveys, benthic habitat, watershed analysis, etc.  This project included data acquisition, processing and the development of interagency standards including map projections, directory structure and naming conventions.  These standards were adopted for use in the American Samoa Spatial Data Infrastructure.

The Nature Conservancy's Arctic Ecoregional Planning Initiative
Nuna Technologies provided support for GIS data acquisition efforts by developing an inventory of data sources and metadata for North Slope Borough archives focused on 30 years of subsistence and biological data sets.  This included extensive technical assistance to facilitate and deliver data via CD-ROM and FTP.

National Science Foundation
Allison Gaylord was a Co-Principal Investigator for a Human Dimensions of the Arctic System (HARC) project entitled, “Synthesis Approach, to Link Remote-sensing Information with Natural History and Traditional Knowledge, Through Cases of Unusual Ice Conditions”.  Extensive use of satellite imagery acquired from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Ice Center and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska.

Arctic Research Consortium of the United States
